Backwaters of Kerala
from £3,300 per person
Itinerary
-
Day 1 - 3 - London - Dubai - Cochin
Upon arrival, be met and transferred to a wonderful hotel in Cochin. Once settled in, take a wander around Fort Cochin before an early evening, private sunset harbour cruise and dinner. Cochin is spread across islands and promontories and lies in a stunning location between the Arabian Sea and the backwaters. It is linked by a series of bridges and a complex system of ferries – making it an exciting place to visit.
-
Day 4 - 5 - Cochin - Idukki
Be driven three hours east to the Idukki district of Kerala, which is formed of rugged mountains and covered in forests. Trek through the plantations to see the cultivation and harvesting of tea, coffee, cardamom, cloves and pepper. It is a lovely idea to take a picnic or go for a long walk through the scenic countryside.
-
Day 6 - 7 - Houseboat Cruise
Today, reach Alleppey and board a private houseboat for a cruise through the peaceful backwaters. The houseboats are converted rice boats and offer a unique and relaxing way to explore the waterways. Stops will be made en-route at the churches, temples, villages and to see the cantilevered fishing nets, hanging eerily over the water, for which the area is famous. The Backwaters comprise a network of canals and lagoons, at times only a few yards inland from the sea, and stretching for miles. These freshwater waterways wind their way through the tropical jungles of palms and fruit trees, vibrant green paddy fields and small, water based settlements.
-
Day 8 - Thalayolaparambu - An Island Farm
Disembark from your houseboat to spend one night in a hotel on a private island, which is also a working farm. Sit on your verandah and watch life pass by.
-
Day 9 - 11 - The Coast
This morning, drive south along the coast to a beautiful retreat resort, stopping along the way for lunch. The boutique hotel is tucked amongst lush green flora and fauna, and flanked by two secluded beaches. Each of the cottages has its own unique style blending traditional and modern décor for peaceful feel. An outdoor bathroom and private verandah enhances the relationship with nature. There is a spa for treatments and a whole host of other activities to take part in.
-
Day 12 - 13 - Cochin - Dubai - London
In the morning you will be met at the hotel and driven up the coast to Cochin. Have lunch in the Old Fort before heading to the airport for your return journey to London via Dubai.
